AAAS-SIPPI Annual Meeting: Briefing on Effects of Intellectual Property on Academic Research

17 Feb 2006 14:00

St. Louis, MO

This special event, which is open to all registrants, will reflect on the 2005 AAAS-SIPPI report, Intellectual Property in the AAAS Community: A Descriptive Analysis of a Pilot Survey on the Effects of Patenting on Science. The goal is to inform and spark a dialogue with those in attendance—including members of academia, industry representatives, nonprofit organizations, government, and the media—on how intellectual property is affecting the conduct of scientific research. The event also will help further disseminate the findings and conclusions of the report, including among members of the press. Mention of SIPPI’s forthcoming international survey on the effects of intellectual property in the scientific community will be made.

This event will be overseen by Stephen Hansen, Director of the SIPPI project, and will be cosponsored by the National Academies Board on Science, Technology, and Economic Policy (STEP), featuring STEP’s most recent work on scientific knowledge and intellectual property. It will include a small number of invited guests who will help facilitate the briefing and ensuing discussion.
