USPTO Electronic Patent Information Interface Requires Transition for Users

24 Aug 2006

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has announced that, effective 11:59 PM, December 31, 2006, its Legacy Patent Application and Information Retrieval (PAIR) system software no longer will be supported by the Office. Those currently using Legacy Private Pair have been "encouraged to transition over to the new Private PAIR system prior to 31 December 2006."

Among its functions, PAIR offers users the ability to download copies of items such as their patents or patent applications, as well as any materials related to those applications. In February 2006, the USPTO launched a "portalized" variant of Private Pair, with increased usability relative to its predecessor. However, by the year's end, individuals must switch to the new Private Pair system in order to continue using this electronic interface.
