China Releases Scientific Data Sharing Plan
29 Oct 2006
At a recent international conference for the Committee on Data for Science and Technology (CODATA), Xu Guanha, Minister of Science and Technology for China, announced the country's plan to make over three-quarters of its data from the hard sciences publicly available by 2010.
The plan includes creating 40 "scientific data centres" over the next four years, to include 300 databases that will enable users to access a broad spectrum of scientific information through an interface overseen by the Ministry of Science and Technology. Mr. Guanha stated that the majority of centres currently are under construction.
Many of China's scientists have experienced difficulties in obtaining access to data critical for their research. Mr. Guanha acknowledged that problem and stated that China's science ministries are addressing it by working to ensure that the sharing of data derived from publicly funded research is made "compulsory."
In July 2006, the Chinese Academy of Sciences announced the planning of a massive "e-Science" initiative to develop an infrastructure for the sharing of scientific data.
