UN, Yale University, and Publishers Take Lead in Fostering Developing Nations' Access to Environmental Research
3 Nov 2006
The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), Yale University, and a coalition of well-known scientific journal publishers have initiated a project that will provide scientists and researchers from a host of nations throughout the Global South with access to more than 1,000 peer-reviewed journals of relevance to environmental science.
The initiative, Online Access to Research in the Environment (OARE), will include collaborative efforts representing over 200 scientific publishers and professional associations, with financial support from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. It will allow journal access to scientists and researchers from institutions such as universities and government environment agencies throughout Latin America, Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe, accounting for over 100 nations. The collaborating scientific publishers include several prominent names, such as Blackwell, Elsevier, and the U.S. National Academy of Sciences.
OARE will consist of an online "portal" published in English, Spanish, and French. Access to OARE will be provided free of charge or for a "nominal" fee, depending on a country's level of wealth.
