Google Launches Beta Version of Patent Search Tool

17 Dec 2006

The popular Internet search engine host, Google, has introduced a new service that will allow users to search the full text of patents as well as identify patents of potential interest.

Google Patent Search draws upon domestic patent information available from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). All patents that have been issued by (or are available via) the USPTO are included. Google Search is not, however, capable of searching patent applications. According to Google, patents "issued over the last few months" presently are not included, but the company expects to increase its portfolio of available patents.

As with Google's Book Search, images of patent information have been transposed in such a way that patent text can be searched by users. Google Patent Search allows users to perfom search techniques similar to its other services, such as "basic" and "advanced" searches.
